Relief Panels From Line Art

A relief is a sculpture that stays attached to its background — a medallion, a carved door panel, a coin face. Producing one by hand means interpreting a drawing as a height field and sculpting each level of depth in the right order, which is slow and unforgiving work. Hi3D's 3D relief generator infers that depth automatically. Ornament reads as raised, background reads as recessed, and the transition between them keeps a crisp edge rather than melting into a gradient. The result is a solid body with a defined base, not a displaced plane, which means it slices and mills without the wafer-thin walls that ruin hand-built height maps.

Lithophanes and Photo Panels

A lithophane turns brightness into thickness: thin where the image is light, thick where it is dark, so the picture only resolves when lit from behind. Getting the thickness range right is the whole craft, and it is where most attempts fail — too flat and the image disappears, too deep and the panel becomes opaque. Hi3D produces geometry with a usable depth range straight out of the generator, giving you a panel that already reads correctly before you touch a slicer. Print it in white PLA at a fine layer height, stand it in front of a light source, and the photograph appears in the material itself.

Ready for CNC and 3D Printing

Relief work splits between two fabrication routes and Hi3D serves both. For 3D printing, the STL export is watertight and manifold, so a slicer computes the toolpath without complaining about open edges, and a flat back means it lies on the build plate without supports. For CNC routing and laser engraving, the same closed geometry imports into CAM software as a machinable body rather than an ambiguous surface, letting you set stepover and depth of cut against a shape the software fully understands. One generation, two fabrication paths, no repair step in between.

    Step 1: Start With High Contrast

    Relief depth is inferred from tonal separation, so images with clear light and dark regions convert best. Line art, engravings, logos, silhouettes and portraits with defined shadows all work well; washed-out or evenly grey images give the generator nothing to push against.

    Step 2: Generate the Relief Body

    Upload the artwork and let Hi3D build the geometry. The generator raises the subject, recesses the ground, closes the sides and adds a base so the result is a solid volume rather than a displaced sheet. This takes 40 to 90 seconds.

    Download the STL, drop it into your slicer or CAM package, and set your layer height or stepover. For lithophanes, print flat-face-down at a fine layer height in a light filament; for decorative panels, a coarser layer height is usually enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Contrast is the deciding factor. Engravings, woodcut-style illustrations, logos, coin designs and portraits with clear shadow shapes all convert into convincing depth because the generator has strong tonal boundaries to work from. Photographs shot in flat, even light produce shallow, mushy relief. If an image looks good reduced to two or three tones, it will make a good relief.
